Edgewater to Deliver BroadSoft-Optimized SD-WAN Service

Real-time communications like voice and video need access to adequate network resources to avoid latency and other service-impacting issues. And voice and video are part of such unified communications solutions as those provided by BroadSoft (News - Alert).

But the internet connections many businesses want to use for their cloud-based applications are typically best-effort. That means they can be rather inconsistent in the bandwidth and other performance metrics they deliver.

However, BroadSoft partner Edgewater Networks (News - Alert) Inc. is working to address that with its upcoming SD-WAN service. This network overlay service will automatically put BroadSoft application traffic on the best available internet connection. As a result, BroadSoft customers will be able to offer end user service level agreements.

BroadSoft, which Cisco last week announced plans to buy, brings its UC software and services to market through an ecosystem of communication services provider partners.

The SD-WAN service is available to companies using Edgewater’s Network Edge Orchestration platform. The service, which is optimized for the BroadSoft BroadWorks and BroadCloud platforms, will be available for customer trials starting Nov. 1. Its full commercial rollout is slated for early January.

SD-WAN is a nice match for VoIP, as Peter Radizeski of RAD-INFO (News - Alert) Inc. noted in the SD-WAN cover story package of INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine’s first quarter 2017 issue.

Radizeski explained that “SD-WAN has the ability to improve VoIP. One way is through the packet shaping and QoS features built into an SD-WAN appliance. If that fails to improve the call quality, SD-WAN allows for best path routing. In other words, on a network with two or more internet connections (for example, DSL, cable, and 4G), SD-WAN can not only bond these circuits into one bigger pipe, SD-WAN can analyze which connection has the best path for VoIP (or real-time communications like video) and route VoIP packets that way.”

To learn more about the many benefits of SD-WAN, join TMC (News - Alert) and many of the leaders in the communications and networking arena at SD-WAN Expo. This event will take place Feb. 14 through 16 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
